The Boston Bruins were purchased as an expansion team for the NHL in 1924. Charles Francis Adams, a grocery store financier, bought the francise for $15,000. This was the first American francise to play in the NHL. After playing at the Boston Arena for three years, Boston played their first game in The Boston Garden on November 20th, 1928.
The Atlanta Flames owner, Skalbania, sold his team to six businessmen in Calgary on May 21, 1980. Calgary played their first game at the Stampede Corral on October 9, 1980 in which they tied the Quebec Nordique 5-5. The Flames reached the ultimate prize in 1988-89 winning their only Stanley Cup.
The Edmonton Oilers History starts in the WHL. As the Indianaplis Racers folded in mid season the Oilers signed Wayne Gretzky. This was the Last Season in the WHL and Edmonton was granted permission to join the NHL for the 1979-80 season. And most importantly Edmonton was allowed to retain the rights to Gretzky who was on his way to being the best ever player.
The Montreal Canadiens have just celebrated their 100th anniversary. Between 1915 and 1993 Montreal won 24 Stanley Cups, the most by any NHL franchise. They have played in 5 buildings, The Jubilee, Westmount Arena, Mount Royal Arena, The Forum and currently The Bell Centre.
The Toronto franchies was founded in 1917 as the Toronto Arenas. From 1919 to 1926 Toronto played as the St Patricks and in 1927 Conn Smythe purchased the team for $200,000 and changed the name to the Leafs. They opened the Maple Leaf Gardens in 1931 with winning the Stanley Cup the same year. This was one of the 13 times Toronto has won the Cup.
Abe Pollin was awarded an expansion team to the NHL in May of 1972. On June 12, 1974, the Washington Capitals had the expansion draft and on October 9, 1974 the Caps played their 1st game, (6-4 loss to NYR). Doug Mohns was the teams 1st Captain at 40 years of age. They played in The Capital Centre which had 17,962 seats which would range from $160-$340 for a season ticket.
